ANTHEM by Arn Rand

ANTHEM by Ayn Rand Vocabulary


The story used simple words which made it hard for me to choose words which are unfamiliar. so I decided to select those words which I am interested in and which I was curious to know where those words came from. The meaning in the dictionary is the same as what the author wants the reader to comprehend. So here it is

(1) JERK  /jərk/- Everytime I hear this word,  I remember the jerky beef 


But this word means (in the American Heritage Dictionary)
          i-v. to give a sudden quick thrust, pull, or twist to
          ii-v. to move in sudden abrupt motions
          iii- n. a sudden yank, twist, or jolt

This word is seen on this phrase


But we jerked our head away, hid our face upon our tied hands, and bit our lips.


(2) SHRIEK  /SHrēk/  - by this word I remember Shrek

But this word means (in the American Heritage Dictionary)
          i- a shrill, often frantic cry

This word is seen on this phrase:

(3) FALTER /ˈfôltər/ - sounds weird but this word reminds me of my cousin whose name is Walter. Haha!

But this word means (in the American Heritage Dictionary)
          i- v. to weaken or to be unsteady in purpose or action; waver
          ii- v. to stammer or stumble
          iii n. unsteadiness in speech or action

This word is seen on this phrase:

They walked to the pyre, and their step did not falter. 


(4) SPANGLE   /ˈspaNGgəl/ -
          i- a small piece of shiny metal or plastic used especially or garments for decoration


(5) FURROW    /ˈfərō/

          i- n. a long shallow trench  made in the ground by a plow or other tool
          ii- n. a deep wrinkle in the skin
